Illnesses Of Two Syndromes

Despite an insufficient or excessive “Qi” (essential energy) and blood, imbalance of “Yin Yang,” or disharmonized internal organ function could make us sick,  internal disorder is not the only cause of illnesses.  In fact,  sicknesses also come from external sources, mostly via our skin, mouth, and nose, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

“Whether it is internal pathogen or external pathogen, our body should be capable of fighting these ‘disease evils,’” TCM Practitioners said.  “We call this force ‘Healthy-Qi,’ which is equivalent to ‘Resistance’ in Western Medicine.”

Illnesses Of Two SyndromesObviously, if our Healthy-Qi can fight off the pathogens, we won’t get sick, otherwise, we will.  In TCM theory, all illnesses can be categorized into “Weak Syndrome” or “Strong Syndrome.”  Weak Syndrome refers to illnesses caused by inadequate Healthy-Qi.  That is when our Healthy-Qi is insufficient, our body will be unable to resist a virus even that is not a powerful one.  Strong Syndrome, on the contrary, refers to illnesses caused by a powerful virus regardless the Healthy-Qi has remained strong.

“Although it is not a therapy of a disease, to determine whether a sickness is caused by Weak Syndrome or Strong Syndrome helps us to find out the origin of the illness, which is an important process of a treatment,” TCM Practitioners said.

Take flu as an example, if a patient gets flu frequently and often during a non-virus season, he/she may just have Weak-Syndrome flu.  As the virus is not powerful, the symptoms appeared will not be as serious as well; they include fatigue, light fever, cough, etc.  However, since the patient has inadequate Healthy-Qi, he/she typically needs longer time to recover, and is inclined to develop chronic disease.

Whilst for a Strong-Syndrome flu patient, his/her symptoms will be more acute and serious including high fever, vomit, diarrhea, severe cough, etc.  Nonetheless, because of the patient has adequate Healthy-Qi, he/she will have fast recovery in spite of the virus is powerful.

“Even though with the same disease, there will be different treatments due to the Weak Syndrome and Strong Syndrome dissimilarity.  For Weak-Syndrome patient, initial treatment is to find out the cause of a weak Healthy-Qi, and help him/her to replenish it.  While for a Strong-Syndrome patient, treatment will be focused on virus.  Once the type of the virus is identified, proper remedy can be provided,” TCM Practitioners added.
